the Method
The system
Classical Pilates is a method of full-body exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century. For nearly a hundred years, the Pilates method has helped people of all ages and abilities strengthen, tone, rehabilitate and balance their bodies. Relying on a series of exercises first designed for use on a mat, Joseph Pilates took his initial mat-based exercises and added spring tension leading to the apparatus we use in classical Pilates today.
Practicing classical Pilates means that one is true to the original system as first developed by Joseph Pilates. This includes the utilization of hundreds of controlled movements performed in a sequence that was designed to guide the body through a full range of movement. Whether practicing mat or apparatus based classical Pilates, a student practicing consistently will achieve an improved posture, strength, breath control, balance, spine mobility, and overall health.
